Challenges into Opportunities

Opportunistic times for businesses and investors.

It’s about perspective as well as seizing opportunities as they present themselves. I have stressed the importance of remaining liquid especially during tightening liquidity and rising rates when the costs of debt and capital are increasing. Cash is quite valuable even in inflationary times as opportunities are upcoming and many can be great.

This time period may last for “some time”, however, this is when companies improve & differentiate, grow market share, expand into new industries, acquire, & new leaders emerge. It is through these challenging times that we grow.

Survival of the most adaptable and innovative!

During these contractive, compressed times, the most adaptable & innovative rise. However, strategic tough decisions must take place. It isn’t easy but nothing worthwhile and rewarding is easy. We must take calculated risks and plan accordingly but exercise patience and discipline. Opportunities will arise so we must remain ready and liquid.

There is consolidation with mergers and acquisitions either through vertical or horizontal integration. When we acquire or merge vertically we are gaining more important parts in the company’s production process or supply chain. We can streamline or improve the processes anywhere from the raw materials or beginning of the process to the delivery or fulfillment of the product or service. During horizontal integration we look to acquire or merge with competitors within the same or similar industry to differentiate the products or services as well as gain valuable market share. By eliminating competitors by merging we should also gain their clients/customers thus larger piece of the market share.

Redistribution of assets and liabilities to cost reduce, streamline and grow. We want to increase productivity as well as improve efficiency and effectiveness.

“Healthy” corrections…forces businesses to be their “best”. During these tightening cycles, businesses as well as investors need to make tough decisions. They need to be focused and allocate their resources wisely as well as optimize their decision making. Although it may seem there is no light at end of the tunnel, improvements and benefits are forthcoming. Eventually we will all benefit. As businesses improve the customer will benefit as they are provided a greater product or service.

Many businesses will undergo these tough critical decisions which can provide massive opportunities for all.

Our international manufacturing e-commerce business transformed & grew significantly during the 2008 economic contraction & became a leader in many industries. We were able to seize opportunities that became available during these tough times that are not usually present during periods of expansion. When times are good it is more difficult to rise up significantly. To me it is through the difficult times that we grow the most. Whether in life or with business opportunities.

As I say often, contractionary periods always present opportunities. We just need to be ready and look for them. Adaptability and innovation are key drivers for seizing these opportunities. Diversifying your offerings during these “slower” times so you are ready when the times improve. Now we can change our business models and make our strategic alliances and modifications.

Differentiating and gaining market share through organic & nonorganic growth such as vertical and horizontal integration are great ways to streamline our processes and grow our profits.
