Top Line vs. Bottom Line: Why AI’s Margin Follows Power, Not Productivity

Everyone loves comparing AI to dot com. Fine. Let’s actually compare them, instead of just yelling “bubble” at each other.
Dot Com Was a Top Line Story
The internet made it cheap to reach customers, so the gain showed up as revenue. Same inputs, more customers. ๐ Connectivity.

AI Is a Bottom Line Story
AI makes output cheap, so the gain shows up as margin. And it’s not “same inputs, more output.” It’s fewer inputs, more output. ๐ญ Productivity.

That’s the part that doesn’t hire. Top line technologies add people. Bottom line technologies remove them. It’s why you can get a “strong” economy and 29K jobs in the same month, and everyone acts surprised.
And the bust lives in a different place, too. 2000 was an equity bubble. This one is being built on credit.
But Margin Gets Competed Away
Here’s the catch nobody puts on the investor deck. If every firm gets the same 10x, prices fall and the customer wins, not the shareholder. Productivity that everyone has is not an edge. It’s the new baseline.
So the question isn’t who gets more productive. It’s who owns the input that can’t be copied.
The Scarce Input Is Power ๐
And that input moves. In 2023 it was GPUs. Right now, it’s power.
Nvidia can double output in 18 months. Meanwhile:
- A gas turbine order is 3 to 4 years out.
- A transformer is 2 to 3 years.
- A grid connection can take 5.
- A nuclear plant is a decade.
You can’t print electrons, and you can’t ship them across an ocean. Every data center being announced right now needs power that hasn’t been built yet. Announcing a gigawatt campus is easy. Plugging it in is the hard part.
Follow the Scarcity
Scarcity goes to whatever takes longest to build. That’s where the pricing power lives, and the margin follows it down the stack.
