The AI Trade’s Scarce Unit Is Now the Energized Megawatt
The AI trade has quietly changed its unit of account. In 2023 and 2024, scarce GPUs determined who got allocation and who won the silicon trade. In 2025 and 2026, GPUs became purchasable, but power did not.
The scarce unit is now the energized megawatt: sited, permitted, interconnected, and firm. A transmission queue can take four to seven years, while a substation transformer may have a multi-year lead time. No amount of capital spending can compress a permitting calendar.
Follow that unit and the map redraws itself around generation, grid equipment, storage and firming, cooling, and the former miners whose sites became valuable because they already had an interconnect. That is infrastructure scarcity, not a simple chip shortage.
Tokens are refined electricity; every query monetizes an electron that survived a queue. Power names remain execution stories with long builds and financing risk, and policy can reroute the map. But today, the constraint is the investment: price the electron.
